On September 17, 2001 Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason M. Baker made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, protecting our community. Only a few days earlier Jason shared his thoughts with students in a classroom on the world-changing events of September 11, 2001. Jason said, “have faith,” “support the government at the local level,” “be vigilant,” “pray for national leaders,” “reflect on what happens to us as a nation, and “say thanks to public safety, fire and police personnel”.

These words became the inspiration for the Beyond the Badge Run & Walk held at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Jason's father, Jerry Baker, a law enforcement officer since 1971 established the run and the ride as a way to honor fallen public safety heroes and to thank those who serve in public safety locally, statewide, and nationally. This event helps to support the Jason M. Baker Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarship assistance to Indiana high school seniors intending to pursue a career in public safety at an Indiana college or university.

The Jason M. Baker Public Safety Scholarship Committee is comprised entirely of community-focused volunteers who have dedicated themselves to the support of those in public safety. Our Mission is to raise money to fund the Jason M. Baker Public Safety Scholarships, which are awarded to students pursuing a college education in preparation for a career public safety. We are guided by the values of dedication to service, community, and country. We strive to always honor and remember those who have given their lives in service to their community, as well as those who currently serve.
