“A Time to Say Thanks”

Sheriff’s Deputy Jason M. Baker made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on September 17, 2001, protecting our community. Only a few days earlier Jason had shared his thoughts with students in a classroom on the world-changing events of September 11, 2001. Jason said, “have faith,” “support the government at the local level,” “be vigilant,” “pray for national leaders,” “reflect on what happens to us as a nation,” and “say thanks to public safety, fire, and police personnel.”

Jason’s life and words will be forever memorialized at the Heroes of Public Safety Memorial and through two fundraisers that bring attention to those who make sacrifices for our freedom while raising money to fund a college scholarship in Jason's memory. The premier event is the
“Beyond the Badge Run and Walk” which is held in beautiful Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana. Inspired by the love of a father and by the respect of fellow public safety officers, a grateful and caring community comes together every September to honor fallen heroes and to thank those who serve in public safety — locally, statewide, and nationally.

The second event is "The Heroes Tour Motorcycle Ride" which visits memorials around the area that have been erected to honor our public safety heroes and those in the military. The escorted ride also visits Crown Hill Cemetery with stops at the Heroes of Public Safety Memorial and the Field of Valor Memorial honoring those who have given their lives protecting their community.

Jason M. Baker dedicated his life to service, community, and country. Jason’s father, Jerry Baker, a law enforcement officer since 1971, worked in collaboration with the Central Indiana Community Foundation to establish “The Jason M. Baker Scholarship Fund.” High school seniors intending to pursue a career in public safety at an Indiana university or college are eligible to apply for scholarship assistance. The scholarship is renewable for each of the 4 years the recipient is in school. For more information on the scholarship and/or apply click here.

Proceeds from race entry fees, sale of race t-shirts, and donations will go to “The Jason M. Baker Scholarship Fund.” Your support of this event is a great way to celebrate the lives of our public safety officers and to THANK them for their brave and unselfish service.
